15 dead, 16 injured in Sri Lankan bus accident

A devastating bus accident occurred in Sri Lanka’s mountainous Ella area on Thursday night, resulting in the deaths of 15 people and injuring 16 others.
The bus, carrying local tourists visiting tea plantation hill towns, plunged nearly 1,000 feet into a ravine after hitting another vehicle, crashing through guardrails, and shooting over the side of the mountain road.
The group was returning home after a holiday in the cooler hills when the bus hit another vehicle, crashed through guardrails, and then shot over the side.
Police are investigating the exact cause of the accident, with possible factors including driver error or mechanical failure.
Sri Lanka’s winding roads are considered among the most dangerous in the world, with an average of 3,000 road fatalities recorded each year.
The recent accident is the worst since May, when 23 passengers died in a bus crash in Kotmale.
