Britain’s Duchess of Kent, Katharine, dies at 92

Britain’s Duchess of Kent, Katharine, wife of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, has passed away at the age of 92.
She died on Thursday night, September 4, 2025, at her home in Kensington Palace, surrounded by her family ¹.
Born Katharine Worsley in 1933, she married Prince Edward in 1961 and became a member of the royal family.
The couple met five years earlier when Prince Edward was stationed at a military barracks in northern England.
Katharine was known for her decades-long association with Wimbledon, where she regularly presented trophies to winners, becoming a beloved figure on Centre Court.
One of her most memorable moments at Wimbledon came in 1993 when she comforted Czech player Jana Novotna after her tearful defeat in the singles final.
Katharine’s words of encouragement, “I know you will win it one day,” proved prophetic, as Novotna went on to claim the title five years later.
However, her ties with Wimbledon soured in 1999 when she was denied permission to bring the young son of a bereaved friend into the royal box.
Beyond her royal duties, Katharine was passionate about music and charity.
She lent her name to musical charities and taught music at a school in Hull, often working anonymously.
Her charity, Future Talent, supported aspiring musicians from disadvantaged backgrounds.
In 1994, Katharine made history by becoming the first senior royal to openly convert to Roman Catholicism, defying laws that long barred royals from becoming Catholic.
This decision showcased her independence of thought and commitment to her faith.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer paid tribute to her compassion and modesty, recalling her public kindness at Wimbledon and her quiet dedication as a teacher.
“She brought compassion, dignity, and a human touch to everything she did,” he said.
The King and Queen, along with other members of the royal family, have expressed their condolences to the Duke of Kent, his children, and grandchildren.
The Duchess of Kent is survived by her husband, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, aged 89; their three children; and 10 grandchildren.
