Bandits kill 7, injure many in Katsina attack

Armed bandits have attacked Magajin Wando village in Dandume Local Government Area of Katsina State, killing at least seven people and injuring many others.
The incident occurred between 11 p.m. and midnight on Friday, with preliminary findings indicating that the ambush was carried out by the same group of criminals seeking revenge for earlier clashes with the Community Watch Corps.
According to eyewitnesses, the bandits stormed the community, firing sporadically and causing residents to flee for safety.
Five persons were reportedly killed instantly, while two others succumbed to gunshot wounds later.
The attackers also kidnapped two women and a boy.
Members of the Community Watch Corps confronted the attackers, leading to a gunfight that pushed the bandits back.
However, on their return, the security team was ambushed, resulting in two additional deaths and eight injuries.
The bandits also torched a patrol vehicle belonging to the local vigilante group.
The Katsina State Government has confirmed the incident, with Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Danmusa, commending the bravery and sacrifice of the Community Watch Corps for their prompt response.
The government pledged to intensify security operations, working closely with the military, police, and other security agencies to track down and dismantle the criminal networks behind the attacks.
The government urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly share any useful information with security agencies to support ongoing operations.
Danmusa extended deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and prayed for the quick recovery of the injured.
He assured that the state government remained resolute in its commitment to restore lasting security across Katsina State.
The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Katsina State and other parts of northwestern Nigeria, where banditry, kidnapping, and cattle rustling are rampant.
The Northern Elders Forum has cried out to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to declare an emergency in the region due to the escalating violence.
