Lagos wins 9th national youth games

Team Lagos has emerged champion of the 9th National Youth Games held in Asaba, Delta State, topping the medals table with an impressive 52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze medals.
The victory marked a significant milestone for the state, dethroning defending champions Team Delta.
Delta, the host state, displaced Edo to come second with 37 gold, 38 silver and 39 bronze medals .
Edo State garnered 33 gold, 18 silver and 28 bronze medal to finish third.
A total of 33 states participated in the games, winning 802 medals: 246 gold, 236 silver, and 320 bronze.
The event showcased talented young athletes from across Nigeria, highlighting the country’s rich sporting potential.
Meanwhile, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on the National Sports Commission (NSC) to take urgent measures to curb age cheating in the National Youth Games (NYG).
The governor made the plea during the closing ceremony of the 9th edition of the games in Asaba, Delta State.
Oborevwori described the NYG as a festival of unity, discipline, and excellence, commending athletes for their resilience and sportsmanship.
He however, expressed concern over the continued practice of states fielding over-aged athletes, which undermined the vision of the games.
Oborevwori urged the NSC to introduce stricter measures to restore integrity and ensure the event remains a true nursery of young talents.
The governor thanked President Bola Tinubu, the NSC, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), coaches, officials, and volunteers for their roles in ensuring a smooth and successful outing.
He also expressed Delta’s readiness to host the 10th edition of the games in 2026.
In his remarks, Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, represented by Chief Amaka Asiofu, praised the State Government for its robust sports development system.
He assured that the Commission would continue to implement policies to nurture young talents and promote a sports economic ecosystem.
