Nigeria edge Rwanda 1-0 to boost 2026 world cup qualification hopes

The Super Eagles secured a slim 1-0 win over Rwanda in their 2026 World Cup qualifier, withTolu Arokodare’s hitting the net in the 51st minute.
The victory puts Nigeria in third place in Group C, six points behind leaders South Africa and Benin Republic.
The team will face South Africa on Tuesday in a crucial match to determine their qualification chances.
The match was a closely contested affair, with Nigeria dominating possession but struggling to break down Rwanda’s defense.
Victor Osimhen thought he had given Nigeria the lead in the eighth minute, but his goal was ruled offside.
He was later substituted in the 33rd minute due to an injury, replaced by Cyril Dessers.
Despite the setback, the Super Eagles continued to press forward and eventually found the breakthrough in the 51st minute through Arokodare’s acrobatic effort.
Rwanda’s goalkeeper, Fiacre Ntwari, made several impressive saves, including a double save to deny Moses Simon and Ademola Lookman.
However, Arokodare’s strike proved to be the decisive moment in the match, giving Nigeria a vital win.
The Super Eagles now face a tough challenge as they travel to South Africa on Tuesday, where they will need to secure a win to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive.
Nigeria must win its remaining games and hope for favourable outcomes from other matches to stand a chance of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
