Bayelsa West Senatorial District: The case for Senator Dickson’s re-election

A debate has emerged in the Bayelsa West Senatorial District, comprising Sagbama and Ekeremor Local Government Areas, over the potential re-election of Senator Seriake Dickson.
A strong case has been made for his re-election, citing his experience, influence, and proven capacity as a senator.
The argument by Nwambu Gabriel Chibuzor, Ph.D., who wrote from Abuja stated that Senator Dickson’s re-election is not only justifiable but also beneficial for the people of Bayelsa West, based on his experience, influence, and demonstrated capacity.
While acknowledging the importance of zoning, Nwambu contends that the actions of political actors in the past have created a precedent that must be considered, and that the greater good of the constituency should be the paramount consideration.
His words: “Senator Dickson’s extensive political career, including his tenure as a two-term governor of Bayelsa State and member of the House of Representatives, made him a seasoned politician.
“His experience as a ranking senator has equipped him with the ability to attract federal projects and attention to his constituents. Retaining him would ensure continued development and progress in the district”, he added.
He further said, “Senator Dickson has demonstrated strong character, capacity, and competence in his role, even as a member of the opposition.
“His track record of debating critical national issues and attracting development projects showcases his effectiveness as a representative.
“His ability to prioritise the interests of his constituents has earned him recognition and support from various groups, including the Niger Delta Ex-Agitators Forum.
“The principle of zoning has been inconsistently applied in Bayelsa West, with previous instances of politicians from the Ekeremor axis contesting senatorial elections despite zoning agreements”, he added.
For him, “This historical context complicated the current argument against Senator Dickson, making a strong case for his re-election based on fairness and the greater good of the constituency.
“Senator Dickson has received endorsements from various groups, including the Niger Delta Ex-Agitators Forum, Community Development Committee chairmen, and community leaders in Sagbama and Ekeremor Local Government Areas of the state.
“These groups praise his sound representation, advocacy on national issues, and commitment to the development of the Niger Delta region.
“The case for Senator Dickson’s re-election is built on his experience, influence, and proven capacity as a senator.
“With his ability to attract development projects and prioritize the interests of his constituents, he remains a strong advocate for the people of Bayelsa West.
“Given his track record and the endorsements he has received, it is likely that Senator Dickson will continue to make a positive impact in the National Assembly if re-elected.
“The call for Senator Henry Seriake Dickson to be allowed to “breath” and seek another term is a pragmatic and well-founded one.
“It is an argument rooted in the principle of political fairness, the strategic advantage of retaining a ranking senator, and a focus on the tangible benefits of effective representation.
“The previous disregard for zoning by some political actors from the Ekeremor axis provides a strong historical basis for resisting the current demand for a strict application of the rule”.
“More importantly, the people of Bayelsa West would be better served by a representative with the experience, influence, and proven competence of Senator Dickson, who can continue to attract development and make a tangible impact in the National Assembly.
“He should be accorded the respect to contest and, if the people so choose, to return to the Senate in 2027”, he said.
