President Tinubu pushes for Nigeria to host 2030 Commonwealth games

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his unwavering support for Nigeria’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, describing it as a “dream” that must become a reality.
In a post on Wednesday on his official X account, Tinubu emphasised that hosting the Games would send a powerful message about Africa’s significance in the Commonwealth’s future.
No African nation has ever hosted the Commonwealth Games, making Nigeria’s bid a landmark opportunity for the continent.
President also said hosting the Games would enhance Nigeria’s global standing, promote international engagement, and strengthen its sports infrastructure.
Tinubu further urged the Commonwealth to “complete the circle of unity,” emphasising the importance of inclusivity and diversity in the organization’s events.
Abuja, the nation’s capital, has been proposed as the host city for the 2030 Games.
The Nigerian delegation, led by Shehu Dikko, President of the Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC), and the Commission’s Director-General, Bukola Olopade, would present the final bid to the event’s evaluation committee.
Nigeria lost its bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games to Glasgow, Scotland.
The Commonwealth Games is a multi-sport event held every four years, featuring countries that are former territories of the United Kingdom.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games would be hosted in Glasgow, Scotland, after the Australian state of Victoria pulled out due to rising costs.
