Sowore accuses Wike of diverting $300m Ogoniland cleanup funds

Activist Omoyele Sowore has accused Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, of diverting $300 million meant for Ogoniland’s remediation and development into constructing HyperCity Supermarkets in Port Harcourt, RiversState.
Comrade Sowore made this revelation in a post on X on Friday, citing a document presented by an Ogoni delegation to President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa.
Sowore also alleged that Wike funneled the funds earmarked for Ogoniland’s remediation and development into building HyperCity Supermarkets.
He further described Wike’s actions as “unprecedented looting, killings, and destruction” and vowed to continue pressing for accountability.
His words: “The revelation is that  Nyesom Ezenwo Wike diverted $300 million earmarked for Ogoniland’s remediation and development.
“Reports indicate that Nyesom Ezenwo Wike funnelled the funds into constructing a chain of supermarkets in Port Harcourt, known as ‘HyperCity Supermarkets, ” he added.
The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has also called for an immediate investigation into the missing funds.
MOSOP President, Fegalo Nsuke, expressed frustration over the alleged corruption, stating that the money could have addressed critical challenges such as providing clean water, improving power supply, and enhancing infrastructure.
Sowore’s allegations have reignited calls for a full investigation into how funds earmarked for Ogoniland’s recovery were managed.
The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) was launched in 2016 to clean up Ogoniland, which has suffered decades of oil pollution.
The project aimed to address the environmental and health impacts of oil pollution in the region.
Wike has not publicly responded to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.
