Arise news anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, 29, dies in Abuja robbery attack

 

Tragedy struck Arise News Television as one of its prominent news anchors, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, popularly known as Sommie, was killed in an armed robbery incident at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, on Monday, September 29, 2025.
She was 29 years old.
The management and staff of Arise News announced her passing with heavy hearts, describing Sommie as a cherished member of their family and a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with viewers.
Arise News management called for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits, emphasising that Sommie’s spirit, passion, and legacy will endure despite her tragic demise.
Beyond her work in journalism, Sommie was also a trained lawyer known for being a professional, supportive colleague, and friend to many.
The news of Sommie’s death has sent shockwaves through the media industry, with prominent figures paying tribute to her memory.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, condemned the killing, describing it as a grievous loss to the Nigerian media fraternity and the nation.
Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, also expressed deep grief, calling for swift justice.
The Nigeria Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Sommie’s death.
