Former President Olusegun Obasanjo warns of population crisis

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has raised alarm on Nigeria’s rapid population growth, cautioning that if left unaddressed, it could lead to severe consequences, surpassing the current security challenges posed by Boko Haram.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Bakhita ICT Centre at the Catholic Secretariat on Tuesday in Sokoto, Obasanjo emphasised the importance of education and knowledge in national development.
Nigeria’s population is projected to reach 400 million, by 2050, posing significant challenges in providing food, work, and satisfaction for its citizens.
Obasanjo stressed that failing to prepare for this growth would have dire consequences, stating, “If we fail to prepare for that, Boko Haram of today will be a child’s play. We have to take care of it now” .
Obasanjo urged Nigerians to appreciate and celebrate the country’s unity in diversity, rejecting external narratives that mischaracterize the nation.
“If our diversity is taking along with good governance with everybody being included, then we will get there.
“Not will we be respected, we will be counted among the leading nations of the world.”

The former President commended Bishop Matthew Kukah for spearheading the ICT project, describing it as a facility accessible to all Nigerians, regardless of their background.
Also speaking, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, echoed Obasanjo’s sentiments, stressing the need for unity in addressing security challenges and promoting development.
He emphasised the urgent need for Nigerians to unite in addressing security challenges and fostering development.
Representing Aliyu, Alhaji Aminu Dikko, the Chief of Staff to the Sokoto State Government, expressed appreciation to Obasanjo and the Catholic Diocese for the initiative.
He assured that the state government would remain committed to promoting technology education to expand opportunities for future generations.
