Passport, visa services to continue despite U.S. govt shutdown – U.S. embassy

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has announced that visa and passport services will continue despite the partial shutdown of the U.S. government.
The assurance comes amid concerns from Nigerians about potential disruptions to visa processing, student travel plans, and other consular services.
The shutdown resulted from a dispute between Democrats and Republicans over healthcare funding, leading to a lapse in government appropriations.
“Due to the lapse in appropriations, this X account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information.
“At this time, scheduled passport and visa transit services in the United States and at U.S. Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits”, the embassy stated in a notice issued via its official X handle.
While several federal departments and agencies have halted operations, essential services such as the military, postal service, and social welfare schemes would continue uninterrupted.
However, the embassy’s social media accounts will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, except for urgent safety and security information.
The Embassy advises Nigerians to check (link unavailable) for updates on consular services, including visa appointments and passport processing.
This would help ensure that individuals stay informed about any changes or developments in the services provided.
President Donald Trump defended the shutdown, suggesting it could help eliminate programs linked to Democrats’ priorities.
Despite the shutdown, essential services will continue, providing some stability amid the uncertainty.
