Flights cancelled at Germany’s Stuttgart Airport after cable fire

Dozens of flights were delayed and several were cancelled at Germany’s Stuttgart Airport on Thursday after a cable fire disrupted operation.

The airport’s website listed cancellations of eight departures and five arrivals, with around 60 services delayed.

A spokeswoman for the airport said the cancellations were partly due to planes not being able to reach Stuttgart following the blaze on Wednesday evening.

The fire broke out in an operations building, away from the terminals, and passengers were not directly affected, a spokesman for the airport operator said.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Flight operations were halted for about an hour on Wednesday evening and all departures were suspended for the rest of the day.

The fire knocked out parts of the airport’s power supply, affecting systems such as runway lighting, the spokesman added.

By late evening, the runway had been reopened and arrivals resumed.

Some flights had been diverted to other airports, including Nuremberg, Munich and Frankfurt.

No passengers were injured, the spokesman said.

Two firefighters were taken to hospital for examination after being exposed to smoke.

The extent of the damage remained unclear, and passengers were advised to check the status of their flights with their airlines.
