Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan returns to plenary after 6-month suspension

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has returned to the Senate plenary for the first time since serving a six-month suspension.

The senator, who represents Kogi Central, was suspended in March over alleged violation of the Senate’s standing rules.

The suspension sparked mixed reactions, with civil society organisations and opposition politicians condemning the Senate’s action.

However, the upper chamber defended its decision.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had approached the court in July over the matter and made an unsuccessful attempt to resume sitting.

On Tuesday, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan finally returned to the Senate plenary, which was presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The Senate had resumed plenary after a 10-week recess, with a significant turnout of senators.

In his opening address, Senator Akpabio urged lawmakers to recommit themselves to accountability, discipline, and purposeful governance.

He reaffirmed the Senate’s responsibility to the Nigerian people, stating that “to the citizens of Nigeria, we hear you. You asked us not for excuses, but for results. We will remain accountable and responsive.”

In a show of international solidarity, some senators arrived at the chamber dressed in Palestinian colours and attire, advocating for a free Palestine.
