Senate proposes 10-year passport ban on Nigerians convicted abroad

The Nigerian Senate has taken a step towards restoring the country’s global reputation by approving a bill that proposes a 10-year international passport ban for Nigerians convicted of crimes abroad.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Abubakar Bello (Niger North), aimed to amend the Passport (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and introduce stricter penalties to deter criminal conduct by Nigerians overseas.

Leading the debate on the floor, Senator Onawo Ogwoshi, speaking on behalf of the sponsor, noted that the proposed legislation sought to address the damage done to Nigeria’s reputation by the misconduct of a few citizens.

Senator Ogwoshi described the bill as “imperative and compelling,” stressing that it would serve as a strong deterrent to those who damage Nigeria’s international reputation through criminal activity.

Ogwoshi also noted that the green passport, once a symbol of pride, is now widely disrespected, and lawmakers believe this bill will help restore its dignity.

“Innocent and patriotic Nigerians suffer harassment in airports, visa denials and constant suspicion simply because of the actions of a few, the green passport, once a symbol of pride, is now widely disrespected. That is nothing less than a state of emergency,” he said.

According to the proposed legislation, any Nigerian convicted of a crime in a foreign country would have their passport withdrawn for a decade following the completion of their sentence.

The lawmakers argued the measure would both punish wrongdoers and signal to the global community that Nigeria is committed to accountability.

The bill signaled Nigeria’s commitment to accountability and responsible citizenship, demonstrating the country’s efforts to tackle transnational crimes and restore its global standing.

The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Interior for further legislative input and public hearing.

The bill when passed, would represent a significant step towards rebuilding international confidence in Nigeria’s passport system and demonstrating the country’s commitment to accountability.
