Amnesty International urges Tinubu to reconsider pardons

Amnesty International has expressed concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s recent presidential pardon granted to several individuals convicted of human rights violations.

The group urged the government to reconsider the clemency, warning that the decision prioritised offenders over victims and undermined justice.

Last Thursday, Tinubu pardoned figures including Herbert Macaulay, a founding father of Nigeria, and former FCT minister Major General Mamman Vatsa (rtd), along with other convicts, ex-convicts, drug offenders, illegal miners, and foreigners.

The pardons have sparked controversy across the nation.

In a statement, Amnesty International said the pardons block justice and reparations for victims, threaten the rule of law, and risk entrenching impunity for serious crimes.

The organisation emphasised that the manner in which the pardons were executed seemed to favour perpetrators rather than providing effective remedies for victims and their families.

“President Tinubu should reconsider the pardons and uphold the rights of victims,” the statement urged.
