Reps: Emefiele estate should go to vulnerable Nigerians

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to allocate a forfeited Abuja housing estate, formerly linked to ex-CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele, to low-income Nigerians, IDPs, and vulnerable citizens.

This demand followed a motion presented by lawmaker Jafaru Gambo Leko, who urged for transparent, equitable distribution of the property.

The estate in question, situated at Plot 109, Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, comprises 753 duplexes and apartments.

It was recently handed over to the Ministry of Housing after a final forfeiture order by the Federal High Court.

Leko stated that the estate was allegedly developed with proceeds of corruption, calling its recovery a “milestone” in Nigeria’s ongoing anti-corruption efforts.

“If properly managed, this estate could ease Nigeria’s housing crisis,” he noted.

The lawmaker cautioned that without public oversight, the estate might be quietly allocated to politically connected individuals, undermining its intended social impact.

“The absence of a transparent process could erode public trust,” Leko warned.

He emphasised that the 1999 Constitution mandated government at all levels to promote citizens’ welfare, including access to shelter.

Following the debate, the House resolved that: The Ministry of Housing must design and publish a clear, inclusive allocation framework, prioritising the poor, IDPs, and vulnerable groups.

A detailed report must be submitted to the House within 60 days outlining allocation criteria and beneficiary selection.

The Committee on Housing and Habitat would monitor the process and report back within four weeks.

”Nigerians must feel the impact of asset recovery,” Leko added.
