FG mourns Niger tanker explosion victims, warns against fuel scooping

The Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the petrol tanker explosion that claimed more than 30 lives in Essa, Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State, on Tuesday.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the government extended condolences to the government and people of Niger State, describing the incident as a tragic reminder of the dangers associated with fuel tanker accidents.
“We join the Government and people of Niger State in mourning this painful loss.
”This heartbreaking incident has once again brought to the fore the devastating human and material consequences of fuel tanker accidents in our communities,” the statement read.
The minister lamented that despite continuous public sensitisation and repeated warnings, some individuals still engage in the dangerous act of scooping fuel from fallen tankers.
He stressed that every Nigerian life is precious and that such preventable tragedies highlight the urgent need for greater caution and adherence to safety guidelines during emergencies.
The Federal Government commended the Niger State Government, security agencies, and emergency responders for their swift efforts to contain the fire, rescue survivors, and provide relief to affected families.
Idris disclosed that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been directed to support the state’s ongoing response by delivering medical aid and relief materials to victims, while the National Orientation Agency (NOA) would intensify nationwide awareness campaigns on fuel safety—particularly in rural and high-risk areas.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire people of Niger State in this moment of grief.
“May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may God grant their loved ones the strength to bear this painful loss, ” the minister said.
The explosion occurred when a petrol-laden tanker overturned on the Bida–Badeggi–Agaie Road in Essa, sparking a fire as residents attempted to collect spilled fuel.
Many of the victims were reportedly among those trying to scoop petrol before the tanker ignited.
The Federal Government reiterated its appeal to citizens to prioritise safety and avoid actions that could endanger lives during such accidents.
