Lagos State relaunches ‘cash for trash’ initiative to promote recycling

The Lagos State Government has reintroduced its popular Cash for Trash programme, urging residents to exchange recyclable waste for cash in a bid to strengthen environmental sustainability and reduce waste pollution across the city.
The state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the relaunch on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, on Friday highlighting the programme’s goal of rewarding residents for participating in recycling efforts.
Hon. Wahab noted that the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Recycling Team was currently stationed in Lagos Island, demonstrating to households how everyday waste such as plastics, cans, and bottles could be converted into income.
“Did you know your trash can turn into cash?
::Our @Lawma_gov Recycling Team is on the ground in Lagos Island, showing communities how to make it happen!
”We’re rewarding residents every Thursday for helping us keep Lagos clean and green. It’s a win for your wallet and a win for our city,” he said.
A video shared alongside the post showed LAWMA officials weighing bags of recyclables on portable scales and handing out cash rewards to participating residents.
Wahab encouraged residents to engage actively with the programme, describing it as a reflection of the government’s commitment to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Lagos.
The initiative, which has been a longstanding programme under the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, aimed to combat climate change, promote a circular economy, and instil a culture of environmental responsibility among Lagosians.
