NFF clarifies FIFA, CAF funds are project-tied, not annual gifts

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has clarified that funds received from FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) are strictly tied to specific projects and development programmes, and are not annual gifts to the Federation.

In a statement released on Friday, the NFF explained that the clarification was necessary in light of misinformation circulating on social media, suggesting that the Federation receives millions of dollars annually as unmonitored cash.

The body emphasised that every dollar received from FIFA or CAF is earmarked for a defined purpose, with both organisations sending auditors to examine NFF accounts at the end of each fiscal year.

According to the Federation, monies meant for development including FIFA Forward projects are linked to specific programmes and infrastructure initiatives.

”Examples include the ongoing NFF/FIFA Players’ Hostel and the construction of new training pitches at the MKO Abiola National Stadium,” it said.

The statement highlighted that every stage of these projects was verified, assessed, and approved before funds are released to FIFA-approved consultants, who receive payments directly.

Addressing critics, the NFF dismissed claims of misappropriation, stating that social media commentators often misrepresent figures without understanding the cost of organising even a single national team match.

The Federation reaffirmed its commitment to strict financial protocols aligned with global best practices, noting that its audited accounts prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers, a globally respected auditing firm, were regularly presented at the NFF’s Annual General Assembly.

The NFF’s clarification underscored the body’s focus on transparency, accountability, and adherence to international football financial regulations.
