Amupitan pledges collaboration with National Assembly for transparent elections

Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, the newly sworn-in Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has vowed to work closely with the National Assembly to ensure Nigeria’s elections are credible, fair, and transparent.

Speaking at the 56th Annual National Conference of the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers (NALT) held at the Federal University of Lokoja, Professor Amupitan emphasised the need for electoral reforms that reflect lessons learned from past polls and bolster public trust in the system.

Amupitan was also honoured by the university for his dedication and contributions to Nigeria’s democratic process.

“I will actively participate in engagements with the National Assembly to ensure our electoral laws support a learning process that Nigerians can be proud of,” he further stated.

He highlighted that a well-structured legal framework is essential for a credible electoral system, noting that law serves as a foundation for societal progress.

The INEC Chairman also stressed that ongoing reforms aimed to reduce electoral litigations by ensuring fairness and transparency at every stage.

“We must strive to prevent electoral petitions in court and create a process that truly reflects the will of the people,” he said.

Amupitan was confirmed by the Senate after a rigorous screening session on October 16, 2025, and formally sworn in by President Bola Tinubu on October 23.

He succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who led the commission from 2015 until his exit this month.

During his address, Amupitan called on academics and stakeholders to continue supporting efforts that strengthen Nigeria’s democracy, underscoring the critical role of collaboration between the electoral body and legislative institutions.
