UNIJOS confirms killing of student by colleague, clarifies incident happened off campus

The management of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) has confirmed the tragic death of Peter Mafuyai, a 300-level student of the Department of Banking and Finance, allegedly murdered by his friend and fellow student.
In a condolence statement issued on Monday in Jos, the Registrar of the university, Dr. Rejoice Songden, described the incident as “deeply saddening,” while clarifying that it occurred outside the university premises.
“The Management of the University of Jos has received with great sorrow the report of an unfortunate incident involving two of our students, which resulted in the death of Mr. Peter Mafuyai, a 300-level student of Banking and Finance,” Songden said.
“The deceased was allegedly killed by his friend, Mr. Nanpon Timnan, a 200-level student of Agricultural Science.”
She expressed the university’s condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, praying for God’s strength and comfort to help them bear the painful loss.
Songden stressed that contrary to reports circulating on some media platforms, the incident did not happen on campus, but at a private location in Jos.
She also noted that academic activities for the 2024/2025 session had ended on Aug. 30, and that students were currently on break, expected to resume for the 2025/2026 academic session on Nov. 10.
“We regret this tragic development and assure parents, guardians, students, and the general public that adequate security measures are in place to protect lives and property within the university environment,” she added.
According to her, the university is working closely with security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident and to guarantee that justice is served.
