Edo Govt gives ex-deputy Gov. Omobayo one week To return state assets

The Edo State Government has given former Deputy Governor, Omobayo Godwins, one week to return all government property and assets still in his possession or face arrest.

The directive was contained in a statement released on Tuesday by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Fred Itua.

The government warned that failure to comply within the stipulated period would prompt the Commissioner of Police in the state to arrest Mr. Omobayo and recover all state-owned assets through legal means.

According to the statement, the government expressed disappointment that several official items including vehicles, documents, and other property assigned to Omobayo during what it described as his “brief and illegitimate tenure” have not been surrendered, despite multiple formal reminders.

“The Edo State Government reiterates that all assets acquired or utilised in the course of public service remain the property of the State and must be duly returned upon cessation of office.

“The continued retention of such property constitutes a clear breach of public trust and unlawful possession of state assets, ” he said.

The government, therefore, directed Omobayo to return all items in his custody to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government within seven days from the date of the announcement.

Governor Okpebholo’s administration emphasised its commitment to accountability, transparency, and the protection of public assets, warning that no individual, regardless of status or political affiliation, would be allowed to withhold property belonging to the people of Edo State.

“The Government urges Mr. Omobayo to respect this directive and avoid actions that could invite consequences or further embarrassment,” the statement added.

Omobayo Godwins served briefly as deputy governor before leaving office amid political tension in the state.
