Sylva denies involvement in alleged coup plot

Former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and ex-Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva, has refuted claims linking him to an alleged coup plot, describing the reports as baseless, malicious, and aimed at tarnishing his reputation.
The allegation, published by Sahara Reporters, alleged that certain political figures were plotting to destabilize the country.
In response, Sylva dismissed the story as a deliberate attempt to smear his image and incite public unrest.
The Defence Headquarters has also denied any knowledge of a coup attempt, maintaining that there is no evidence of any plan to overthrow the government.
In a statement issued by Sylva Staunch Supporters (Powered by CPO), the group criticised the publication, questioning Sahara Reporters’ persistence in promoting a narrative that has already been discredited by military authorities.
“It begs the question: Is Sahara Reporters now the official mouthpiece of the military, or does it have another agenda?
“The insistence on pushing a false story is both misleading and embarrassing, ” the statement read.
The group also highlighted Sylva’s loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his continued support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, particularly during the recent Bayelsa governorship campaign.
They urged media organisations to verify information before publication, cautioning that sensational or unverified stories could inflame tensions and damage reputations.
“The public deserves truthful and balanced reporting. Responsible journalism demands accuracy, fairness, and fact-checking, ” the statement added.
Sylva’s supporters also suggested that the timing and tone of the reports were part of a broader strategy to discredit both the former governor and the current administration.
The group warned that such misinformation could undermine confidence in the media and public institutions.
“By spreading unfounded allegations, Sahara Reporters is not only harming individuals but also weakening trust in democratic institutions,” the group stated.
They called on all stakeholders to denounce irresponsible journalism and protect Nigeria’s democratic stability from politically motivated falsehoods.
