New Army Chief pledges swift action against terrorism, insecurity

Major-General Waidi Shaibu, the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has pledged to confront terrorism and insecurity across Nigeria with renewed vigor and strategic precision.
Shaibu made the declaration on Thursday in Abuja, moments after taking over as the 25th COAS from Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, who has been elevated to the position of Chief of Defence Staff.
Addressing the press, Major-General Shaibu vowed to make the Nigerian Army more agile, professional, and combat-ready, emphasizing his commitment to restoring lasting peace throughout the country.
“The nation is experiencing challenging times, and the Army will respond decisively and effectively to all emerging threats.
“We are fully aware of the situations in some parts of our country that have caused hardship, fear, and displacement among law-abiding citizens.
”These situations are unacceptable and will receive my urgent attention, ” he said.
Shaibu also assured that ongoing military operations would be carefully reviewed and strategies adjusted to effectively neutralize threats.
“I assure Mr. President and all Nigerians that we shall not disappoint the nation,” he said.
The new Army Chief emphasised continuity, pledging to build on the achievements of his predecessor, Lt.-Gen. Oluyede.
He acknowledged the progress made in equipment procurement, infrastructure development, and the welfare of troops, while committing to deepen the “soldier-first” philosophy and strengthen professionalism, discipline, and collaboration with other security agencies.
Earlier, Lt.-Gen. Oluyede expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for entrusting him with the leadership of the Army.
He highlighted the operational and administrative gains recorded during his tenure and urged officers and soldiers to extend the same loyalty and support to Maj.-Gen. Shaibu.
“As I transition to my new role, I call on all personnel to give even greater commitment to Maj.-Gen. Shaibu, who brings exceptional experience and dedication,” Oluyede said.
He reaffirmed his confidence in the Nigerian Army’s ability to safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity, noting that ensuring a secure and united Nigeria remains a collective responsibility.
Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalami Ibrahim, Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), lauded Oluyede’s leadership, emphasizing his focus on troops’ welfare and professionalism.
“His tenure will remain a reference point for empathy and effective command,” Ibrahim stated.
The ceremony marked a new chapter for the Nigerian Army, with leadership committed to tackling security challenges while maintaining high standards of discipline and operational excellence.
