President Tinubu unveils digital identity app

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a credible, secure, and verifiable national identity system, describing it as essential to Nigeria’s long-term development, security, and governance reforms.

Speaking at the State House, Abuja, during the official launch of the NINAuth App, a new digital identity verification platform developed by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the President said the initiative reflects his administration’s drive to modernise public service and eliminate bureaucratic inefficiency.

“A credible and inclusive National Identity Management System is fundamental to our developmental aspirations.

“It supports financial inclusion, strengthens social welfare, enhances security, and ensures accurate data for evidence-based planning.”

According to a statement issued by Presidential Spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu noted that the introduction of the NINAuth App marks a new chapter in Nigeria’s digital transformation journey and demonstrates the government’s resolve to harness technology for transparency and accountability.

“Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, we are leveraging innovation to simplify access to public services, curb corruption, and promote trust in governance,” he said.

“This system ensures every Nigerian has a verifiable digital identity one that is secure, usable, and globally recognised.”

President Tinubu announced that all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) would soon be required to integrate the NINAuth App into their operations for staff and data verification, emphasising that technology-driven governance would remain central to his administration’s reform agenda.

Tinubu also described the platform as one that would put Nigeria “at par with the world’s most technologically advanced nations” by providing seamless and secure access to government and private-sector services while safeguarding citizens’ data.

“This innovation simplifies access, reduces bureaucratic interference, and closes the gaps that breed inefficiency and corruption,” the President said.

“Let us all embrace this new era responsibly and ensure it serves as a bridge connecting our people and institutions toward a more prosperous nation.”

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who spoke at the event, praised the President for his forward-looking leadership, saying Tinubu was “solving tomorrow’s problems with technology.”

“Every nation that seeks to function efficiently must first build systems that identify, authenticate, and secure its citizens,” the minister stated.

“Identity management is not just an administrative requirement—it is the backbone of governance, security, and service delivery.”

Explaining the workings of the new platform, NIMC Director-General, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, said the NINAuth App is designed to eliminate duplicate data records by providing real-time authentication of citizens’ information for government agencies and businesses.

She revealed that 126.7 million Nigerians have so far been enrolled in the National Identity Database, with about 25 million registrations completed in the last two years—a feat that has generated an average of 1.3 million verification requests daily.

“With NINAuth, enterprises and institutions can instantly verify the identity of individuals in a secure and reliable way.

“This innovation enhances national planning and builds confidence in the digital economy , ” she said.

President Tinubu urged Nigerians to adopt the new identity platform, saying it would underpin efforts to deliver inclusive development and fair access to social programmes, healthcare, and other essential services.

“The future we seek is one where technology empowers every citizen and trust in governance is built on efficiency and inclusiveness,” Tinubu said.

“Together, we are building a nation where every identity counts, and every citizen truly matters.”
