UK reaffirms commitment to strengthening trade ties with Nigeria

The United Kingdom has reiterated its dedication to expanding trade relations with Nigeria.
The statement was made by British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Jonny Baxter, during the launch of the UK-Nigeria Economic Diversification Working Group Dialogue in Lagos on Thursday.
The dialogue serves as a follow-up to the Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS) Roadshow recently held in Kano and Lagos, and it is organized under the UK-Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership.
The event brought together government officials, trade specialists, and private sector representatives from both countries.
Discussions focused on unlocking opportunities in Nigeria’s non-oil sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, and digital services.
Baxter highlighted that the DCTS provides tariff reductions and simplified trade procedures for Nigerian exporters, covering over 3,000 products such as ginger, cocoa, sesame, cashew, soybeans, and textiles.
“This dialogue reflects our shared commitment to inclusive and sustainable economic growth through strategic diversification of exports,” Baxter said.
He added that the UK is actively creating new avenues for trade, investment, and innovation in collaboration with governments and private sector partners via programs like Propcom+.
Representing the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Ambassador Abba Nura Rimi, through Mrs. Gertrude Orji, praised the initiative and urged stakeholders to understand the DCTS fully to maximize its benefits.
He emphasised the importance of reducing trade barriers, improving competitiveness, and ensuring Nigerian products meet global market standards.
The dialogue is seen as a significant milestone in strengthening economic ties between the UK and Nigeria, fostering cooperation and creating sustainable opportunities for growth.
