Peter Obi urges investment in healthcare to improve life expectancy in Nigeria

Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has called for increased investment in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, stressing that it is essential for raising the country’s low life expectancy.
Obi made the remarks during a visit to the College of Nursing Sciences, Amichi, in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday, where he presented a donation of N15 million to the institution.
He encouraged students to approach their nursing careers with dedication and professionalism.
“By 2030, Nigeria will face a shortage of healthcare workers. Many trained doctors and nurses are leaving the country, but with proper support, we can train enough professionals to improve healthcare and extend life expectancy.
“Life expectancy in Nigeria today is about 55 years, one of the lowest globally. Investment in hospitals, doctors, and nurses can change this.
”A country can only be productive when its health sector functions well,” he said.
Obi emphasised that health is a primary measure of any society and reiterated his long-standing commitment to supporting the healthcare sector through donations and advocacy.
The Anglican Bishop of Nnewi Diocese and proprietor of the college, Bishop Ephraim Ikeazor, praised Obi’s continued contributions, noting that his support extends beyond politics.
“Obi’s style of politics is different. Even after elections, he continues to donate and support institutions as if it were still campaign season.
”This is a man Nigeria will treasure for a long time,” Bishop Ikeazor said.
During the visit, Obi also contributed N5 million to St. Felix Catholic Hospital, Nnewi, reiterating his call for greater attention to healthcare investment across Nigeria.
The event saw the presence of former commissioner under Obi, Professor Stella Okunna, coordinator of Obidient Group Alhaji Yunusa Tanko, and students of the College of Nursing Sciences, Amichi.
Obi’s donations and advocacy highlight the critical need to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system, enhance training for medical professionals, and ultimately improve the nation’s life expectancy.
