NMA gives 72-hour ultimatum over kidnapped doctor in Anambra

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Anambra branch, has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to Governor Chukwuma Soludo and security agencies to secure the release of Dr. Tochukwu Mbanugo, a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, who was kidnapped on October 30.

According to a communiqué signed by Dr. Princeston Okam (Chairman) and Dr. Obiaeli Ifeanyi (Secretary) following an Emergency General Meeting, Dr. Mbanugo was abducted in front of his hospital at Uruagu, Nnewi, and as of the meeting, the kidnappers had not contacted his family, friends, or colleagues.

The NMA warned that if Dr. Mbanugo is not released within 72 hours, all doctors in Anambra State under the association will suspend work until their colleague is freed.

An emergency meeting is planned after the 72-hour period to review progress.

The association stated that relevant government agencies had been informed and reassured the public that doctors would continue to provide healthcare services despite the challenges.

Efforts to reach the Anambra Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, were unsuccessful.

The NMA’s strong stance underscored the urgency and seriousness of addressing kidnappings targeting healthcare professionals in the state.
