PDP crisis escalates as Anyanwu-led NWC counters, suspends Damagum, others

The internal conflict within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified, with Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s faction of the National Working Committee (NWC) announcing the counter-suspension of the party’s National Chairman Umar Damagum and several other top officials.
The move cited alleged incompetence, misappropriation of party funds, and pursuit of personal interests.
Other key officials suspended by Anyanwu’s NWC include: National Publicity Secretary: Debo Ologunagba; Deputy National Chairman (South): Taofeek Arapaja; and National Legal Adviser: Kamaldeen Ajibade.
Others are Deputy Legal Adviser: Okechukwu Osuoha; and National Organizing Secretary: Umaru Bature
Anyanwu confirmed that the suspended officials would be referred to the party’s disciplinary committee for further action and will cease to function in their official capacities during this period.
Interim arrangements have been put in place: Deputy National Secretary, Hon. Setonji Koshoedo, will act as National Secretary.
The National Director of Legal Services will oversee activities of the legal department in place of the suspended legal advisers.
The counter-suspension followed an earlier move by the PDP NWC, which had suspended Anyanwu, the National Legal Adviser, and other officials.
This internal dispute coincided with a Federal High Court ruling that halted the party’s planned national convention, further fueling tensions within the PDP.
The crisis underscored the deepening factionalism and leadership struggle within Nigeria’s major opposition party, with both sides now invoking party disciplinary mechanisms to assert control.
