PDP NWC suspends key officials amid court halt of national convention

The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has suspended several top officials, including the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade; National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu; Deputy Legal Adviser, Okechukwu Osuoha; and National Organizing Secretary, Umaru Bature.

The suspension, which lasts for one month, followed a Federal High Court ruling that stopped the party’s planned 2025 national convention.

The National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, told journalists in Abuja that the decision followed an emergency meeting of the national working committee.

The suspended officials have been referred to the National Disciplinary Committee, and during this period they cease to function in their respective roles.

The Deputy National Secretary, Hon. Setonji Koshoedo, will act as National Secretary, while the National Director of Legal Services has been directed to oversee legal affairs during the suspension.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja had on Friday stopped the planned national convention until the PDP complies with the statutory requirements of the party, its constitution, and the Electoral Act.

The court also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission from accepting a report on the outcome of any national convention unless due process is followed.

Despite the ruling, the PDP maintained that the court verdict does not prevent the party from proceeding with preparations for the convention.

Ologunagba described the judgment as an assault on Nigeria’s democratic processes and said the party has directed its legal team to appeal while continuing its activities toward the election of new national officers.

The suspension of key officials and the court intervention reflect ongoing internal tensions within the PDP as the party navigates leadership disputes and legal challenges ahead of its national convention.
