Renaissance Energy, partners launch free medical outreach in Ofoni

Renaissance African Energy Company Limited, in partnership with the Bayelsa State Ministry of Health and Kolmarg Eyesight Foundation, has launched a free medical outreach benefiting hundreds of residents in Ofoni community, Sagbama Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.

The four-day medical mission, which began Thursday at the Primary Healthcare Centre in Ofoni, targets communities within the Oil Mining Lease (OML) 35 area.

The initiative formed part of the company’s commitment to improving community health and well-being.

Hope Nuka, Corporate Relations Manager, Projects and Opportunities at Renaissance, representing Igo Weli, General Manager Relations and Sustainable Development, emphasised the program’me’s reach.

“This initiative is a milestone in our commitment to advancing community health.

“The focused eyecare initiative serves Ofoni, Bolu-Orua, Toru Agiama, Ebedebiri, Toru-Orua, Agalabiri, Iriama, Lalagbene, Ayamasa, Alebiri, and neighbouring communities, ” she said.

Dr. Ngoware Torunana, Director of Medical Services at the Bayelsa Ministry of Health, representing the Commissioner for Health, commended Renaissance Energy for collaborating with the government.

He noted that the outreach aims to enhance the health and well-being of residents, offering a range of medical services.

The programme, known as the Iseni Phase 1 Project/Vision First Program, provides eye surgeries, eye screenings, consultations, and dispensing of reading glasses.

Additional services include dental care, cardiovascular screening, laboratory tests, health education, treatment of chronic and minor illnesses, deworming, and the distribution of mosquito-treated nets.

Speaking to journalists, Dr. Malachi Enakaitor explained that the medical team comprises specialists across various fields of medicine, ensuring residents of rural communities receive comprehensive healthcare directly at their doorstep.

Among the beneficiaries was Mr. Diepreye Jacob, who received eye surgery during the outreach.

“I came with my eyes closed and unable to see. Now I can see, and the world is beautiful,” he said.

The event was also attended by Dr. Williams Appah, Executive Secretary of the Bayelsa State Primary Health Care Board, along with traditional rulers and community leaders, underscoring the collaborative effort between government, private sector, and civil society to improve healthcare access in rural Bayelsa.

The outreach highlighted the growing role of corporate social responsibility in addressing healthcare gaps and promoting the welfare of communities impacted by oil exploration activities.
