NSSEC partners with Canadian education group to drive school reforms

In a move aimed at transforming Nigeria’s secondary education sector, the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Early Childhood Development Initiative (ECDI), a Canadian educational organization, to implement key reforms in senior secondary schools across the country.
The announcement was made in Abuja on Monday by Fatima Bappare, Head of Public Relations and Protocol at NSSEC.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Dr. Iyela Ajayi, Executive Secretary of NSSEC, described the partnership as a critical step in the commission’s mission to enhance excellence, equity, and innovation in Nigerian secondary education.
He further emphasised that fostering international collaborations would facilitate knowledge exchange, technology integration, and professional development opportunities for educators.
“The collaboration with ECDI represents a landmark milestone in our efforts to connect Nigerian schools with global educational standards.
“Through this partnership, we aim to co-design professional learning programs that align with both Nigeria’s curriculum reform priorities and international best practices, ” he said.
According to Dr. Ajayi, the MoU will also establish institutional linkages between Nigerian secondary schools and Canadian educational institutions, creating avenues for shared research, teacher training, and curriculum development.
He also reaffirmed NSSEC’s commitment to implementing these reforms to achieve a globally competitive secondary education system.
Representing ECDI Canada, Mr. Olumuyiwa Falope, Chairman, highlighted the organisation’s focus on STEM education, digital literacy, teacher capacity development, and inclusive education.
He noted that these initiatives closely align with Nigeria’s ongoing educational reform agenda.
“ECDI has a long-standing record of collaboration with public institutions, development agencies, and community organizations in Canada and internationally.
“This partnership will provide a framework to strengthen the quality and inclusiveness of secondary education in Nigeria, fostering innovation and equitable access for all students, ” he said.
The MoU signals a shared commitment by both NSSEC and ECDI to modernize Nigeria’s secondary school system, leveraging international expertise to meet local educational needs.
