EU reaffirms solidarity with Nigeria, commits to peacebuilding, human rights support

The European Union (EU) has expressed full solidarity with Nigeria, reiterating respect for the country’s sovereignty and pledging continued cooperation in peacebuilding, interfaith dialogue, and human rights protection.
EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, made the remarks during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos, responding to recent comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump threatening possible military action against Nigeria.
“Our position is one of solidarity with Nigeria.
”Solidarity with the victims of violence, with the authorities working to protect citizens, and with the Nigerian people who overwhelmingly desire peaceful coexistence beyond ethnic and religious divides.
”We respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and constitutional commitment to religious neutrality, ” he said.
The ambassador emphasised that EU support is guided by long-standing partnership and shared values with Nigeria, not external influence.
He highlighted that the EU was ready to deepen cooperation in peace, security, and defence, including engaging civil society, traditional leaders, and religious authorities.
Mignot also outlined ongoing EU initiatives to promote peaceful coexistence, including programmes on the deradicalisation, demobilisation, and reintegration of ex-members of non-state armed groups in the North-East.
He stressed the union’s commitment to protecting all communities, particularly minorities, and upholding freedom of religion and belief.
Acknowledging Nigeria’s human rights challenges, the envoy said the country’s legal and institutional frameworks provide a basis for fundamental freedoms.
He added, “the situation is not perfect, as in any country, but it is up to Nigerian authorities and society as a whole to uphold and strengthen this environment of peaceful coexistence.”
Mignot noted that the EU works closely with civil society organisations to foster interfaith dialogue and good relations among religious communities.
He clarified that the EU’s assistance is non-discriminatory, supporting all victims of violence regardless of motive.
Looking ahead, the ambassador disclosed that a peace, security, and defence dialogue between Nigeria and the EU is expected soon, aimed at deepening strategic cooperation.
He said,“our guiding principle is to help Nigeria reinforce stability and prosperity. The country’s future lies firmly in the hands of Nigerians themselves.”
