Delta speaker reaffirms commitment to grassroots sports development

The Speaker of the Delta House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dennis Guwor, has commended all teams that participated in the 2025 Zenith Bank/Delta Principal’s Cup, describing the competition as superlative and a true reflection of Delta State’s rich sporting heritage.

Guwor, who watched the thrilling final match at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, said the tournament underscored the immense potential of Delta’s young people and demonstrated the values of unity, discipline, and healthy rivalry among schools across the state.

“This tournament highlights the abundance of sporting talent in Delta State and the importance of nurturing it.

“It sends a positive message about teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship values that are critical for the holistic development of our youth and the overall growth of Delta State, ” he said.

The Speaker’s remarks were contained in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Nkem Nwaeke.

Guwor noted that he was delighted to witness Urhobo College, Effurun, emerge champions after defeating Ogbe-Ijaw Grammar School 2–1 in an exciting final encounter.

He disclosed that he personally donated the trophy presented to the overall winner of the tournament, as part of his enduring commitment to grassroots sports and youth development.

“My passion for sports and youth engagement is unwavering.

“I will continue to support initiatives that promote grassroots sports and provide young people with opportunities to excel, ” he said

The Speaker congratulated Urhobo College, Effurun, for their well-deserved victory, while also applauding Ogbe-Ijaw Grammar School for their spirited performance and resilience throughout the competition.

“I commend Ogbe-Ijaw Grammar School for their determination and fighting spirit.

”You gave Urhobo College a good challenge, and this level of competitiveness is what makes such tournaments rewarding,” he stated.

Guwor also praised the organisers of the Principal’s Cup for sustaining a platform that continues to promote sports development, teamwork, and healthy competition among secondary schools in Delta State.

According to him, the tournament has consistently provided opportunities for young athletes to showcase their skills while encouraging a balance between academics and extracurricular pursuits.

He expressed appreciation to Zenith Bank, the official sponsor, and all stakeholders who contributed to the success of the 2025 edition, noting that their partnership has been instrumental in keeping the spirit of school sports alive in the state.

The Speaker also extended commendations to the management, teachers, coaches, and students of all participating schools for their dedication, as well as to match officials and organisers for ensuring a successful and memorable competition.
