Urhobo college wins 2025 Zenith Bank/Delta principal’s cup after 2-1 victory

Urhobo College, Effurun, on Thursday emerged champions of the 2025 Zenith Bank/Delta State Principal’s Cup after defeating Ogbe-Ijaw Grammar School, Ogbe-Ijaw, 2–1 in a pulsating final held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.
The thrilling encounter, watched by a large crowd of students, sports enthusiasts, and top government officials, showcased exceptional skill and determination from both teams.
With the victory, Urhobo College walked away with a brand-new school bus and a cash prize of N2 million, while the runners-up, Ogbe-Ijaw Grammar School, received N1.5 million for their impressive performance.
Declaring the event open, the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, congratulated the winning team and all participants for their inspiring display of sportsmanship and excellence.
Represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, FCA, the Governor said the Principal’s Cup aligned perfectly with his administration’s MORE Agenda, which is centered on Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.
“We believe that education goes beyond the classroom. The lessons learned on the field, teamwork, discipline, and perseverance, are the same values that lead to success in life, ” he said.
The governor commended all participating schools for their dedication and sportsmanship, describing the tournament as a vital platform for discovering and nurturing young talents across the state.
“Today, we have witnessed more than just a football match.
“We have seen passion, unity, and a demonstration of the spirit of excellence that defines the Delta youth, ” he said.
He particularly praised both Urhobo College and Ogbe-Ijaw Grammar School for their outstanding display of skill, courage, and teamwork, urging the young athletes to remain humble and focused as they continue to pursue their dreams.
“To all our young sportsmen and women. keep training hard, listen to your coaches, and never neglect your studies. Education is the foundation of every great dream, ” he added.
Governor Oborevwori also announced that the state government would soon roll out a special programme for identifying and grooming football talents discovered through the Principal’s Cup and similar competitions.
He said the initiative would provide opportunities for promising players to develop their potential for participation in state, national, and international tournaments.
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, described the Zenith Bank/Delta Principal’s Cup as a classroom-supportive initiative that fosters discipline, teamwork, and healthy competition among students.
She noted that the championship has grown remarkably since inception, producing several young athletes who have gone on to represent Delta State and Nigeria at various levels.
“The Principal’s Cup is more than just a sporting event.
“It is a learning experience that builds character and strengthens the values of unity and excellence in our schools, ” she said.
The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dennis Guwor, was among dignitaries who attended the final match.
Also present were senior government officials, education stakeholders, and representatives of Zenith Bank, co-sponsors of the tournament.
The grand finale drew enthusiastic cheers from the stands as Urhobo College lifted the trophy to wild celebrations, marking the culmination of weeks of intense competition among secondary schools across the state.
