Cristiano Ronaldo confirms 2026 world cup will be his last

In a career spanning over two decades and more than 950 goals for club and country, Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will mark the final chapter of his international football journey.

Speaking via video link at a Saudi sports forum on Tuesday, the 40-year-old forward confirmed that he planned to retire from professional football within the next one to two years.

“Definitely, yes. I’m going to be 41 years old, and I think the 2026 World Cup will be the moment,” Ronaldo said when asked if the tournament would be his swan song.

He also clarified earlier remarks about retiring “soon,” noting that he still intends to compete at the top level for another season or two before hanging up his boots.

Ronaldo, who currently plays for Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr, joined the club in 2023 after leaving Manchester United for a second time.

His move to the Saudi league was part of a wave of high-profile signings aimed at boosting the profile of football in the kingdom, which is also set to host the 2034 World Cup.

The Portuguese star, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, is aiming to participate in his sixth World Cup.

His closest attempt to lift the trophy came in 2006, when Portugal were eliminated by France in the semi-finals.

Portugal has not yet qualified for the 2026 tournament, which will be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, but a victory over Ireland on Thursday could secure their place in the finals.

Ronaldo’s announcement has stirred reactions worldwide, as fans and fellow professionals reflect on one of football’s most prolific careers.

Known for his remarkable athleticism, goal-scoring prowess, and longevity, Ronaldo’s retirement will mark the end of an era in international football.

As he prepares for his final World Cup, football enthusiasts around the world are already celebrating a career that has inspired millions and redefined the standards of excellence in the sport.
