Lagos police reject allegations of suspect release attempt

The Lagos State Police Command has officially denied reports claiming it attempted to facilitate the release of a Lebanese national accused of child defilement.
In a statement released Tuesday, Command Spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi described the circulating reports as “inaccurate and misleading,” stressing that the case is being managed with professionalism and strict adherence to international best practices.
Adebisi clarified that the suspect is not Lebanese but a citizen of a Southern African country.
She assured the public that the Gender Unit of the command was handling the matter diligently and taking all necessary steps to ensure justice is delivered impartially and without external influence.
“The Gender Unit remains firmly committed to child protection and due process, regardless of nationality or status,” the spokesperson stated.
According to Adebisi, both the child involved and her biological mother have denied any occurrence of molestation or defilement.
She explained that the investigation arose from a complaint filed by the child’s father, who only rarely had custody of the child.
She emphasised that the investigation is being conducted discreetly to avoid any miscarriage of justice, and its outcome will be publicly disclosed.
In response to media reports, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, has directed a comprehensive inquiry into the allegations.
He expressed confidence in ACP Toyin Kazeem, the Officer-in-Charge of the Gender Unit, lauding her as a seasoned and dedicated officer whose leadership has consistently ensured justice for vulnerable individuals.
The CP urged both the media and the public to continue trusting the police’s commitment to upholding justice, particularly in sensitive cases, and promised that the findings of the ongoing investigation would be made public upon conclusion.
