Naval officer defies police during Wike-led demolition in Abuja

A dramatic confrontation unfolded in Abuja on Monday as Lieutenant A.M. Yerima of the Nigerian Navy clashed with police officers during an alleged attempt by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) administration, led by Minister Nyesom Wike, to demolish a property reportedly owned by former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (rtd.)
In a video aired by Channels Television, Lt. Yerima was seen leading a group of naval personnel who physically barred the FCT demolition team from accessing the site.
The property, located in an upscale part of the city, was said to have been marked for demolition over alleged breaches of development regulations.
The standoff intensified when a police officer ordered Yerima to step aside, prompting a spirited response from the naval officer.
“Sir, I’m an officer, I have integrity. I will not shut up. I am a commissioned officer, Sir — you can’t shut me up,” Yerima declared, visibly refusing to yield.
Witnesses reported that the exchange attracted a large crowd as Yerima and his men held their position, insisting that no action would be taken without due clearance from the military authorities.
The incident has since ignited a national debate on the boundaries of ministerial power, the role of law enforcement during civil operations, and the often-delicate balance between civilian authority and military protocol.
Public opinion remained divided with some praising Yerima’s display of loyalty and courage, while others argue that his conduct undermined civil authority and could set a troubling precedent for inter-agency relations.
As of press time, neither the Nigerian Navy nor the FCT Administration had issued an official statement addressing the confrontation.
