Obasanjo praises Makinde for transforming Ibadan

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday commended Oyo State Governor ‘Seyi Makinde for making Ibadan more livable and improving residents’ quality of life through strategic infrastructure projects aimed at easing transportation.
Obasanjo made the remarks at the commissioning of the Ibadan Central Bus Terminal on Iwo Road, which features two modern bus stations equipped with waiting halls, ticketing areas, eateries, public conveniences, parking spaces, power and water facilities, elevators, and escalators.
The former president praised Governor Makinde for his people-centered approach, noting that the terminals will enhance mobility in Ibadan, Nigeria’s third-largest city by population and the largest in land area.
He highlighted that the new terminals at Ojoo, Challenge, and Iwo Road would benefit not only Ibadan but also the wider South-West region, given the city’s historical and economic significance.
“Governor Makinde, you have done so well. You are making Ibadan livable and comfortable for everyone.
”Efficient transportation is essential for a city of this size,” Obasanjo said.
He also advised Makinde to remain focused despite criticism, noting that public opinion often shifts over time.
Governor Makinde, in his remarks, emphasised that the state had built four modern bus terminals Challenge, Ojoo, New Ife Road, and Iwo Road to facilitate free movement and reduce transport challenges in Ibadan.
He highlighted the government’s commitment to non-politicised development, noting that the projects reflect a focus on improving residents’ daily lives.
The governor also addressed concerns about the ongoing 110km Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road, explaining that the project is more than a highway.
He described it as an economic backbone for Oyo State, designed to accommodate industries, logistics hubs, and residential estates, ensuring organized growth for decades to come.
“Cities that fail to plan for tomorrow are swallowed by chaos today. This corridor is for future generations, not for any individual,” Makinde said.
Oyo State’s Commissioner for Works, Infrastructure, and Transport, Hon. Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, described the bus terminals as a milestone in sustainable urban mobility, meeting global standards for safety, comfort, and efficiency.
He urged users to maintain and take collective ownership of the facilities.
The commissioning event was attended by key dignitaries, including Deputy Governor Barrister Bayo Lawal, former Deputy Governor Engr. Hamid Gbadamosi, Speaker Rt. Adebo Ogundoyin, Chief Judge Justice Iyabo Yerima, and traditional rulers from across the state.
Makinde reaffirmed his administration’s vision of “engineering a modern Oyo State, one project, one reform, one vision at a time,” thanking residents and his team for their support in realising the state’s development goals.
