Tinubu urges fair critique of government policies

President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerian journalists to exercise their role as government watchdogs responsibly, urging them to critique policies with fairness, accuracy, and national interest in mind.
Speaking at the All Nigerian Editors Conference in Abuja on Wednesday, President Tinubu emphasised the indispensable role of the media in shaping public opinion and reinforcing democratic governance.
Tinubu stressed that criticism should not be wielded destructively, but as a tool to foster national progress.
“I urge you to continue upholding the standard of journalism report boldly, but do so truthfully.
‘Critique government policy, but do so with knowledge and fairness. Your aim must never be to tear down, but to help build a better society,” the President said.
Tinubu also highlighted the growing influence of social media on news dissemination.
While acknowledging its benefits in promoting citizen journalism, he warned that it can accelerate the spread of misinformation, making the editorial role more crucial than ever.
“In such an environment, verification must be your anchor; balance must be your principle, and professional judgment must be your guide,” Tinubu added.
The President’s remarks further underscored his administration’s stance on media freedom while reminding journalists of the responsibility that accompanies it.
He reiterated the importance of partnership between the government and the press in building a stronger, more united Nigeria.
