Tinubu hails Super Eagles’ 4–1 triumph over Gabon in world cup play-off

President Bola Tinubu has applauded the Super Eagles following their commanding 4–1 victory over Gabon on Thursday, a result that keeps Nigeria firmly on track in their bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the team’s display as a powerful demonstration of the resilience and determination long associated with the Nigerian spirit.

He said the players showed “courage, balance, and precision,” qualities he noted have historically made football a unifying force across the country.

Tinubu said the win had injected renewed energy into the national psyche, reinforcing confidence in the Super Eagles’ ability to secure a place at next year’s global tournament.

He emphasised that the performance served as a reminder of football’s role in binding Nigerians together, regardless of background or location.

The President expressed appreciation to the players, coaching staff, and the entire technical and administrative team for what he described as unwavering dedication to the country’s football ambitions.

According to him, the victory underlined the depth of emerging talent within Nigeria and the team’s determination to reclaim its status among Africa’s elite sides.

Tinubu also commended millions of fans at home and abroad whose passion and loyalty, he said, continue to inspire the Super Eagles, particularly during high-pressure international fixtures.

He noted that the players draw strength from the energy of supporters who rally behind them in every qualifying match.

While celebrating the win, the President urged the squad to maintain discipline and focus as the play-offs continue.

He reminded the players that each remaining fixture offers a chance to demonstrate character and reinforce Nigeria’s ambition of returning to the World Cup stage.

In his message, he stated:
“This is the true Nigerian spirit resilience in the face of challenges.

”Do not relent until qualification is secured. Super Eagles, keep soaring. The entire nation stands with you.”
