PDP convention orders dissolution of party structures in 5 states

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday undertook a sweeping reorganisation of its internal administration, dissolving all party structures in Imo, Abia, Enugu, Akwa Ibom and Rivers states.
The decision formed one of the major resolutions of the party’s national convention held in Ibadan.
The announcement came shortly after the host governor, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, moved a motion seeking ratification of executive committees elected through congresses already concluded in other states and geopolitical zones.
The motion was tabled before delegates at the elective national congress, the highest policy-making forum of the party.
Makinde explained that the PDP had conducted congresses across the federation between 2024 and 2025 to elect officials at the ward, local government, state, and zonal levels, including national ex-officio members.
He emphasised that the exercises were largely compliant with the Electoral Act 2022, the PDP constitution, and internal guidelines, and that both the National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committee (NWC) had affirmed their validity.
However, he disclosed that five states did not meet the same standards, requiring a total overhaul of their existing structures.
“In the cases of Imo, Abia, Enugu, Akwa Ibom and Rivers, the convention hereby dissolves the party structures at the ward, local government and state levels,” Makinde told the gathering, adding that the decision would be formally published as public notice.
National Auditor Daniel Obiechina Okechukwu, a member of the PDP’s NWC, seconded the motion, clearing the path for its adoption by delegates.
The dissolution marks a significant shake-up in the affected states and underscores the party’s attempt to stabilise its internal machinery amid broader efforts to reposition itself at the national level.
