Northern governors condemn abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi

The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has strongly denounced the recent attack on Government Girls’ Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS), Maga, in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, which resulted in the abduction of 25 female students and the reported killing of a school official.
Reacting to the tragic incident on Monday, the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Inuwa Yahaya, described the abduction as “tragic, senseless, and utterly unacceptable.”
Speaking through a statement issued by his media aide, Yahaya highlighted that the persistent targeting of schools poses a serious threat to both regional stability and the nation’s educational progress.
On behalf of his colleagues in the NSGF, Yahaya extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Kebbi State, particularly to the families of the abducted students and those who lost their lives during the attack.
He also assured Governor Nasir Idris of the forum’s unwavering solidarity and support during this challenging period.
“Schools must remain sanctuaries of learning, not targets of violence,” Yahaya emphasised, warning that continued assaults on educational institutions could reverse the progress made in improving school enrollment and tackling the region’s out-of-school crisis.
Yahaya expressed deep concern for the psychological trauma the abducted girls may be enduring and called for an immediate and well-coordinated operation by security agencies to ensure their safe release and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Reaffirming the NSGF’s commitment to collaborate with the Federal Government and security agencies, the Gombe governor stressed that the safety, education, and welfare of young Nigerians remain top priorities for the forum.
He also urged communities to remain vigilant and cooperate fully with security agencies to eradicate criminality in the region.
