Inter-State Retreat: Delta, Bayelsa lawmakers deepen collaboration

The Speaker of the Delta House of Assembly, Mr Dennis Guwor, on Tuesday received members of the Bayelsa House of Assembly who arrived in Asaba to begin a five-day legislative retreat.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the retreat is designed to strengthen parliamentary effectiveness in Bayelsa State.

Addressing the visiting lawmakers during a brief welcome session, Guwor noted that their return visit fulfilled a commitment they made during last year’s engagement in Asaba.

He described Delta as a “second home” to the Bayelsa delegation, stressing that the relationship between the two states was rooted in longstanding cultural and social bonds.

Guwor highlighted the shared realities of both states, particularly their history, traditions, and Niger Delta environment.

He emphasised the need for collective advocacy and collaboration.

According to him, oil-producing states continue to face similar environmental pressures, and joint legislative action could help advance sustainable development across the region.

“The connection between Delta and Bayelsa goes far beyond geographical proximity.

“Our people have common stories, common struggles, and common aspirations.

”It is important that we continuously deepen cooperation as we work to protect our communities, their resources, and their future, ” he said.

He also commended the theme of the retreat, “Leadership, Stakeholder Management, and Socio-economic Growth in Bayelsa State”.

Guwor described it as particularly relevant at a time when legislators are expected to respond to increasingly complex demands from their constituencies.

The speaker expressed optimism that the programme would broaden perspectives, improve legislative skills, and ultimately support better governance outcomes.

He also encouraged the visiting lawmakers to explore Asaba and other parts of the state while participating fully in the retreat sessions, which he said would offer an opportunity for stronger inter-parliamentary cooperation.

Guwor identified environmental protection, resource management, and economic development as areas where both states could achieve more through joint efforts.

Responding, Mr Abraham Ingobere, Speaker of the Bayelsa House of Assembly, praised the Delta legislature for its consistent hospitality.

He noted that the ongoing exchange between the two assemblies has evolved into a productive partnership aimed at enhancing legislative performance and driving development.

NAN also reports that the five-day retreat is being facilitated by the African Parliamentary Resource Center, led by its Executive Director, Dr. John Mutu.

The programme is structured to encourage dialogue on lawmaking, institutional strengthening, and strategies for sustainable socio-economic progress in Bayelsa State.
