The Life and Legacy of Brigadier General Samaila Mohammed Uba By Frank Apokwu

Brigadier General Samaila Mohammed Uba, born on July 1, 1968, was a distinguished officer of the Nigerian Army whose career reflected exceptional courage, professionalism, and steadfast dedication to the nation’s security.

Throughout his service, General Uba held numerous key command, staff, and instructional roles.

He served as Officer-in-Charge of Administration at the Infantry Centre and School, Commander of the 401 Special Forces Brigade in Borno State, and Public Relations Officer for the Nigerian contingent in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda.

In each assignment, he exhibited exemplary leadership, operational acumen, and an unwavering sense of duty.

Renowned for his expertise in counter-insurgency operations, General Uba played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s fight against ISWAP and JAS terrorists in the North-East.

His efforts strengthened civil–military cooperation with local communities, improving intelligence gathering and fostering trust between the Armed Forces and civilians, a hallmark of his approach to modern military operations.

Later, as Director of Defence Information, he spearheaded reforms in military communication, digital innovation, strategic messaging, and transparency.

His initiatives reshaped the military’s engagement with the public and helped reinforce institutional credibility during a period of heightened security challenges.

Tragically, Brigadier General Uba was killed in November 2025 during a joint air–ground operation along the Damboa–Biu axis in Borno State.

After a successful offensive against insurgents, his position was reportedly compromised, leading to his temporary capture by ISWAP fighters.

Though he initially escaped, he was later recaptured and executed following a brief interrogation.

His death highlighted the persistent risks faced by Nigerian troops on the frontlines of the fight against terrorism.

Brigadier General Samaila Mohammed Uba will be remembered as a true Nigerian hero—one who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his country and people.

His courage, leadership, and devotion to duty remain an enduring legacy.

May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.
