Fubara vows completion of Rivers State Assembly complex …. Confirms December 2026 budget presentation

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has reiterated his administration’s commitment to completing the new Rivers State House of Assembly Complex, promising that the 2026 Appropriation Bill will be presented in the state-of-the-art facility currently under construction.

The Governor made the announcement on Monday during an inspection of the ongoing reconstruction at the Assembly site.

Expressing satisfaction with the progress achieved, Fubara disclosed that the main contractor, MCC, has engaged Julius Berger to handle the interior furnishing, a move aimed at accelerating the completion of the legislative complex.

The reconstruction follows the demolition of the previous Assembly building, which was gutted by fire amid past political unrest.

According to the Governor, the complex is on track to be ready by December, just in time for the presentation of the state budget.

“I am very impressed with what I have seen so far.

“The contractors have fast-tracked the work according to our projection, and the interior finishing has been subcontracted to Julius Berger, a company renowned for quality and efficiency, ” he said.

Fubara emphasised the symbolic and practical significance of lawmakers returning to their permanent chambers.

Currently, some members conduct legislative business in temporary quarters within their residential areas, but the Governor is determined to restore normalcy in the Assembly.

“We have worked tirelessly to ensure that the Assembly members have a dignified and permanent facility for their sittings.

“Following the resolution of past disputes, it is our firm desire to see the legislature operate in its rightful place,” he said.

While noting that portions of the old complex that were not demolished will be managed by the Speaker, the Governor reassured that the major reconstruction is a top priority for his administration.

“I strongly believe that by the end of December, the main Assembly building will be ready for use.

“The remaining section, not part of the major reconstruction, can be handled by the Speaker.

”But the primary facility will be fully prepared to host the 2026 budget presentation in the dignified setting that befits our legislative process,” he said.

The Governor’s visit and assurances underscore the state government’s focus on rebuilding key infrastructure and restoring the legislative arm to its full operational capacity, following the disruptions of previous years.
