Lagos police seize 300 rounds of ammunition, recover vehicles, contraband

In a significant security operation, the Lagos annex of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) intercepted a shipment containing 300 rounds of live ammunition and seized several vehicles along with assorted contraband.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Aminat Mayegun, confirmed the discovery on Wednesday, explaining that the interception followed actionable intelligence received by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Lagos FCID Annex, Mrs. Margaret Ochalla.

The ammunition was reportedly concealed inside a Nissan Frontier pickup, part of a larger consignment that also included two Toyota Sienna vans, one Scion XA, 24 bags of imported rice, seven bales of used clothing (commonly referred to as Okirika), cartons of vegetable oil, and various household goods.

“Five suspects connected to the shipment have been apprehended and are currently assisting with investigations,” Mayegun said.

Preliminary inquiries suggest that the consignment originated from a U.S.-based shipper who allegedly failed to declare the ammunition and contraband in the shipping documents, an attempt to evade port security checks.

Authorities are now probing the source, intended recipients, and potential links to broader criminal or arms-trafficking networks.

ASP Mayegun noted that the FCID is collaborating closely with the Nigeria Customs Service and the Department of State Services (DSS) to ensure coordinated intelligence-sharing and prosecution under the Firearms Act and other relevant legislation.

In a statement, AIG Ochalla reaffirmed the department’s commitment to combating insecurity in Lagos and urged members of the public to continue providing credible information to security agencies.

“The FCID remains determined to dismantle criminal networks and hold offenders accountable,” she added.
