Nigeria condemns Guinea-Bissau coup, calls for immediate restoration of democracy

The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly denounced the military coup in Guinea-Bissau, insisting on the immediate reinstatement of democratic governance in the West African nation.
In a statement on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed shock and disappointment over the military takeover, which saw soldiers detain President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and suspend the country’s electoral process.
Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa said the development undermines not only Guinea-Bissau’s democratic stability but also threatens peace across the entire sub-region.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria, in the strongest possible terms, condemns this act of military insurrection.
The described the coup as a violation of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which forbids unconstitutional seizure of power.
Nigeria called for the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order, as well as assurances of safety for all detained officials.
The government urged all actors involved to avoid violence and respect the will of the people expressed in last Sunday’s election.
It also warned that coup plotters would be held responsible for actions that could “plunge the nation into chaos” or erode democratic progress.
Nigeria pledged to work with ECOWAS, the African Union, and other international partners to ensure a swift return to normalcy.
