A violent confrontation between farmers and herders in Zaki Local Government Area of Bauchi State has left one person dead and five others in police custody, authorities confirmed.
The Bauchi State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent Ahmed Wakil, disclosed the details to journalists in a statement titled: “Clash Between Farmers and Herders in Zaki Local Government Area: One Fatality and Five Suspects Apprehended.”
According to Wakil, the incident occurred on 26th November 2025 at around 11:00 a.m., when herders from Jigawa State allegedly trespassed on farmland in Bursali Village, destroying crops and provoking local farmers.
The altercation quickly escalated, resulting in the death of an unidentified herder.
“Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer of Zaki Division, SP Iliya Dogo, promptly dispatched a team of detectives to the scene.
”Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, and a preliminary investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the clash,” Wakil stated.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has ordered that the case be transferred to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Bauchi, for a more thorough investigation.
Wakil emphasised that normalcy has been restored in the affected area, with police maintaining heightened surveillance to prevent reprisals.
He urged residents to remain calm, respect the law, and avoid acts of vigilantism.
“All suspects in custody will be profiled and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” he said, reiterating the police command’s commitment to ensuring justice and preventing further escalation.
The incident adds to ongoing tensions in parts of northern Nigeria, where disputes over farmland and grazing rights have frequently sparked clashes between farmers and herders.
