Fresh tension in Kwara as gunmen abduct farmer in Eruku community

A new wave of fear has swept through Eruku town in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State after four armed men abducted a resident on Sunday, barely a week after 38 kidnapped worshippers were released in the same community.

Sources said the attackers, believed to be bandits, ambushed a farmland located along the Eruku–Koro road, a route linking Kwara to neighbouring Kogi and Ekiti states.

Armed with AK-47 rifles and machetes, the men reportedly seized a farmer identified as Annas Aasanru and fled into the surrounding forest.

A community elder who spoke in Ilorin under condition of anonymity described the abductors as men of Fulani/Bororo origin and confirmed that they operated in a group of four.

“The gunmen stormed the farm area and took the young man away before anyone could raise an alarm,” he said, adding that the latest attack has deepened anxiety among residents who are still recovering from the earlier mass abduction.

Security sources in the area also acknowledged the incident. A senior officer at the Ekiti Divisional Police Headquarters, who requested not to be named, confirmed the kidnapping and assured that efforts are underway to rescue the victim.

“We are coordinating operations to locate the abducted man and maintain calm across the local government,” she said.

The renewed attack has heightened concerns about escalating insecurity across communities bordering Kwara, Kogi, and Ekiti states.
